If like me you own an HTC 8x smart phone, then you may well have been feeling left out by the fact that unless you use development tools, you have been unable to update to Windows phone 8.1.
Well the wait is over, as deployment has begun.
I got notification of the update on my unlocked 8x last night at 9 pm, and decided to bite the bullet and run it. At first I was a little disappointed as the update wasn’t to 8.1, however the handy note on the update screen told me that this update would make my phone ready for 8.1.
Running multiple updates always worries me, as free space can be a problem. As I had 1.2 Gb free on my device I thought that I should be good to go.
The first upgrade went smoothly, albeit long winded as it took nearly two hours.
The second upgrade was a bumpier ride, after taking an age to download the update (even over my VDSL connection), the install process decided that it didn’t have enough space to complete as it needed 655Mb free. I checked the storage and whilst it still said I had 1.2Gb free, I removed my offline maps to free up another 750Mb.
Restarting the upgrade process meant downloading the installer again, which seemed to take even longer this time around.
All told the upgrades took 6 hours, but having spent some time playing with the new features, I can safely say it was worth it.
No doubt I’ll have a long wait for the Windows Phone 10 upgrade, but at least I’ll have Cortana to keep me amused in the meantime.
